We couldn’t count the times when we have arrived for a branding shoot and our beautiful client is morphed behind a thick layer of make-up feeling very uncomfortable and not themselves at all.

So this begs the question do you need to get professional make-up done before your photo shoot?

Our answer is - not always :) For some, having their make-up done gives them the greatest of confidence. But for others, it makes them feel un-natural and self conscious. We think answering the below questions will help you to make an informed decision on whether it feels right for you. Having a bit of a heads up on the whole make up “thing” and the myths around it, will sit you in good stead whatever you decide.

Let’s run through a few questions

  1. What is your branding like, is it clean cut and professional?

  2. Who is your audience?

  3. What are you trying to promote?

  4. Do you usually wear makeup?

We know for ourselves, we don’t usually wear much makeup on the daily. So when we have shoots done, this is a considered choice as our branding is fun, natural and a bit quirky. We honestly feel our clients wouldn’t connect to us in the same way if we were always fully made up. We love getting our make up done don’t get us wrong! But when we do we over emphasise what we want and reiterate to them that our photo shoot will be in natural light. We do think that a bit of make-up (if applied well by yourself or a make-up artist) does help you to look and feel your best.

Make-Up

A good make-up artist knows that you don’t need to overdo makeup for a photoshoot.

See there is a common myth that make-up artists love to use and it is that if you’re having a photoshoot, you need to exaggerate makeup so it shows up. Where does this come from? Well, once upon a time when photography was very different, it was all studio and artificial lighting and it was believed that even if you want a natural look then you still need to really exaggerate the makeup you're applying, because it will not show up as strongly through the camera. Apparently light bouncing off makeup changes the way it looks, and makes it look less dramatic than it really is.

The most important thing when we do a your photoshoot is that you feel comfortable and to feel like you.

So with that in mind you want to know where to get your make up done?

We love Mecca , they have many locations, affordability and ease of booking. In 45 minutes they give you the signature MECCA look: Glowing, sheer, almost surreal skin that elicits compliments. It includes a no-makeup makeup look, neutral eyes and natural looking lips. The cost is $90 but you get this in credit towards products! Just so you know, we aren’t affiliated with Mecca at all - we just love their service and will give a good shout out when one is due :)
